the last day in berlin.
this week has gone crazy fast! we wanted to get the most out of our last day, seeing as all trade shows had ended by now, giving us the freedom to do some touristy activities.
first stop was the jewish memorial, right near the brandenburg gate. it's obviously very famous and a huge constellation, making it really powerful and humbling to be there. on our way to this, we came accross 'the memorial to homosexuals persecuted under nazism' which, if i'm honest, i had never even heard of before. it's a single block with a small window, allowing you to look into the cuboid. inside shows a video on continuous loop of a gay couple kissing.
we also came across the potsdamer platz by accident which is a really famous square in berlin. parts of the berlin wall are on display here, including two pieces of wall completely covered in chewing gum?! i've googled whether this has any special meaning but apparently it doesn't, and the government aren't sure whether to see it as disgusting or as art. i'm sure a episode of america's next top model once featured a photo shoot in an alley covered in gum but that's a different story...
berlin has insanely good public transport, however on this day we decided to just take a walk to the jewish museum to see what we could find on the way. weirdly, we came across checkpoint charlie. for some reason, my parents have always had a photo of the 'you are entering the american sector' sign in our house, so it was quite nice for me to see it and obviously stand in the same place my parents stood before i was even born.
the jewish museum was really interesting to see. it was only opened in 2001 and was designed by daniel libeskind, who is known for his modern and innovative architectural style. the building is in a twisted zig zag shape and contains a garden and a holocaust tower. the holocaust tower is neither heated or lit and creates the eeriest atmosphere. furthermore, there is a 'memory void' space, which features 10,000 faces punched out of steal on the floor, which visitors are invited to walk on.
for our last night in berlin, we wanted to visit 'white trash', a bar which we had heard so many good things about, however they were all booked up for the night. we walked the streets of berlin mitte for a little while and ended up having dinner in a small restaurant. finally, i was really keen on visiting the hofbrauhaus muenchen, a traditional, german, oktoberfest-themed pub, so that was the last stop on our berlin trip.

lots of love from berlin
